Section Information for Fall 2017

This course examines the iconography (the visual representation) and major narratives of ancient Greek mythology using both primary texts in translation and ancient representations of these myths. Students will learn how to visually analyze works of art, both for their style and content.  At the heart of the class is learning to interpret an image that it based on a mythological text: this requires careful attention to detail and knowledge of the stories that give meaning to these symbolic representations.  We will also discuss the importance of these stories and images within the context of ancient Greek culture; the limitations that artistic technique and style impose on an artist; and the way in which artists’ decisions affect the telling of a story.  There will be three exams based heavily on interpretation of images and a brief writing assignment.  No previous knowledge of Greek mythology or art history is necessary.
