Section Information for Fall 2014

This course examines the world of the Islamic Mediterranean in the pre-modern period.  The Mediterranean Sea, like other seas and oceans, was less a barrier than a site of intense interaction between peoples, in this case between Europe and the Islamic world.  This interaction shaped the societies, economies, political institutions and cultures of areas of the Islamic world such as Spain, North Africa, Egypt, Palestine, and Ottoman Anatolia, which will be examined as case studies in this course.  By the end of the course, students should have a familiarity the main events, dynamics and debates surrounding the development of the Islamic societies of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as how their development shaped and was shaped by interaction with the European societies of this sea.
